Composers from all over the world can apply for the City of Leipzig's international Hanns Eisler Scholarship from May 1 to July 1. The scholarship holder can live in Hanns Eisler's birthplace for five months in 2025 and devote themselves to a previously conceived work project, as the city announced on Tuesday. They will also receive financial support of 1,200 euros per month for the duration of their stay. The composition will be premiered at the "Musica Nova" concert series at the Gewandhaus. There is no age limit for applications; a selection jury will decide on the award in mid-August.

Hanns Eisler was born in Leipzig in 1898, but only lived in the trade fair city for two months. He died in Berlin in 1962 and wrote the GDR national anthem. The Leipzig Eisler House Association campaigned for the renovation of the house where he was born in 2016. The first scholarship holder from Scotland moved in in spring 2019.
