For the third time, the Dresden Music Festival is presenting "Cellomania" - a festival within a festival. At Whitsun, the instrument that comes closest to the human voice sets the tone.

Music lovers love the warm, dark but also multi-faceted sound of a cello. On the Whitsun weekend, they can get their money's worth with this instrument at the Dresden Music Festival. Because the cello clearly sets the tone at the festival. This means that "Cellomania" - a summit meeting of 30 cellists from all over the world - is in full swing.

Music festival "very British"

On Saturday, things will already be "very British" at the Kulturpalast. The exceptional British cellist Sheku Kanneh-Mason will perform a European premiere - a cello concerto by Edmund Finnis - as a guest of the Dresden Philharmonic Orchestra under the direction of Andrew Manze. William Lawes and Arthur Bliss are further composers "from the island" in the program.

Vivaldi concertos modern and historical

Parallel to this, two female and three male musicians will perform cello concertos by Antonio Vivaldi in the Luther Church. The "Late Night Baroque" - as the evening is titled - will be hosted by festival director Jan Vogler. The internationally successful cellist, who also has several appearances at "his" festival, wants to introduce the audience to different playing styles. Because a cello sounds different with gut strings than with steel strings.

"Serenade in the Green" and "Long Night of the Cello" on Sunday

A tradition of the music festival continues on Whit Sunday. The Dresden Kreuzchor will perform at the "Serenade in the Green" in Pillnitz Palace Park. In the evening, the "Long Night of the Cello" follows in the Kulturpalast as the highlight of "Cellomania". More than a dozen soloists - including Mischa Maisky, Alisa Weilerstein, Daniel Müller-Schott and Jan Vogler - will perform in various formations with the NFM Leopoldinum Orchestra from Poland and conductor Alexander Sitkovetsky and have announced a tour de force through the cello literature.

Performance by Bastian Pastewka and Joja Wendt

On Whit Monday, actor and comedian Bastian Pastewka and pianist Joja Wendt will take a trip through music history in the morning hours at the Semperoper - across all possible genres. In the evening, the London Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by Edward Gardner, will make its first appearance at this year's festival. However, the focus will then be on the violin. British violinist Nicola Benedetti will perform Edward Elgar's Violin Concerto. His 1st Symphony rounds off the program.

The cello will be back in the spotlight on Tuesday. Vogler will then play Elgar's Cello Concerto with the London Orchestra. The evening at the Kulturpalast will be completed by Elgar's 2nd Symphony and the piece "Forest" by Judith Weir.

The 49th Dresden Music Festival runs until June 14 under the motto "Lightness of Being". A total of 64 events are on the program.
