Saxony's tourism industry looks back on a successful first half of 2026. The cities of Dresden and Leipzig were particularly popular—and camping is also booming.

More visitors and more overnight stays—tourism businesses in Saxony reported growth in the first half of 2026. According to the State Statistical Office in Kamenz, approximately 3.72 million guests were recorded in the first six months—an increase of 2.6 percent compared to the first half of the previous year. Overnight stays rose by 0.6 percent to 8.97 million.

The cities of Dresden and Leipzig, in particular, saw growth—the state capital recorded a 3.5 percent increase in overnight stays, while Leipzig, Saxony’s largest city, saw a 3 percent increase. Saxon Switzerland was also popular, with a 2.2 percent increase.

According to the statisticians, camping also remains a trend. Although, on balance, there was a 5.1 percent decline in camping overnight stays during the first half of the year. However, unlike in 2025, the summer vacation did not begin until July this year and was therefore not included in the statistics. Compared to 2019, Saxony’s campgrounds recorded 35.7 percent more overnight stays.
