Dresden experienced an impressive and emotional day on May 31, 2024, when 1,500 people gathered on Schlossplatz to demonstrate for climate protection. One week before the crucial European elections, the Fridays for Future movement sent out a powerful signal that resonated far beyond the city limits.
The demonstration procession wound its way through the historic heart of the city, past the Fürstenzug, across Neumarkt, Pirnaischer Platz, the Carolabrücke and the Goldener Reiter, before returning to Schlossplatz via Augustusbrücke. The atmosphere was characterized by a mixture of determination and hope. Colorful signs and banners with messages such as "There is no Planet B" and "Climate protection now!" transformed the streets of Dresden into a sea of colors and demands.
Several times during the rally, it was emphasized how important the upcoming European elections are for climate protection. "This time, young people as young as 16 can vote - this is an opportunity we must seize to bring about real change," shouted one speaker to loud applause from the crowd.
