More than 1000 guests took one of the first rides on the Dresden Park Railway on Sunday. "It was a brilliant start to the season," said a spokeswoman for Staatliche Schlösser, Burgen und Gärten gGmbH on Monday. Two mini-trains pulled by electric locomotives will be running on the 5.6-kilometer route through the state capital's Great Garden every Wednesday and Sunday until the end of October. In good weather, one of the steam locomotives will also be used.

With its maiden voyage on June 1, 1950, the park railroad is one of the oldest in Germany. Just under a year later, it was the first pioneer railroad in the GDR - which was also regarded as a kind of training ground for the Reichsbahn. Currently, in addition to 13 adult train drivers, 193 children and young people volunteer their free time to ensure smooth operation. In 2023, 234,000 guests took the opportunity to take a special tour through the 147-hectare green area - on the first day of the season, there were 693.
