In the GDR, the acronym DSF stood for a mass organization. The German-Soviet Friendship had more than six million members; all that remains today are its architectural remnants.

The former House of German-Soviet Friendship (DSF) in Zwickau is going up for auction. Sächsische Grundstücksauktionen AG announced that it is seeking an investor for the historic building. Until 1990, it was used for events, offices, and as a restaurant. However, the building’s history is much older, dating back to 1870.

Before the DSF moved in, it was known as the “Zum goldenen Becher” estate. It has since stood vacant and is in need of renovation. The minimum bid is 29,000 euros. The mass organization DSF had around 6.4 million members in the late 1980s.

More than 100 properties are set to be auctioned

The former DSF building is not the only historic property up for auction at the company’s auction on August 26 in Dresden and August 28 in Leipzig: In Seifhennersdorf in Upper Lusatia, an early 19th-century half-timbered house is up for sale—for at least 250,000 euros. In Morgenröthe-Rautenkranz (Vogtland), the birthplace of Germany’s first astronaut, Sigmund Jähn, the former forestry school is up for sale, and in Warmbad, a district of Wolkenstein (Erzgebirge), the former youth hostel is also on the market.

In total, the offering includes 117 properties with an auction limit of approximately 4.9 million euros. Most are located in Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt, and Thuringia, with a few also in Bavaria, Brandenburg, and Lower Saxony.
