Construction of the new bridge on Federal Highway 101 near Großenhain (Meissen District) has been delayed by several months. The completion date has been pushed back to spring 2027, according to the State Office for Road Construction and Transportation. Not all of the work required for the bridge to open to traffic can be completed in the remaining months until the end of the year.
This includes pouring concrete, waterproofing, and asphalt work. These tasks can only be carried out at suitable temperatures and in dry weather. Construction must be suspended during the winter. Completion was originally scheduled for late 2026.
The old bridge was demolished in December 2024. A special inspection had determined that the structure could no longer be opened to traffic. Like the Dresden Carola Bridge—which partially collapsed in September 2024—the structure was a prestressed concrete bridge made with Hennigsdorf steel.
