Commuters from the Ore Mountains will soon be able to travel to Leipzig without having to transfer—but only during off-peak hours.

The Ore Mountains will get a direct rail connection to Leipzig. The Central Saxony Transport Association announced that service is scheduled to begin by spring 2027. Passengers will then be able to travel between Annaberg-Buchholz and the trade fair city without having to transfer. For now, however, only a few trips are scheduled in the morning and evening. An expansion will depend on the planned upgrade of the Leipzig-Chemnitz rail line, officials said.

According to the plan, Coradia Continental battery-powered trains—which are already in service between Leipzig and Chemnitz—will be used. For the new service, individual trains will be extended beyond Chemnitz to Annaberg. They will each replace one trip on the diesel-powered RB 80 line, which stops at Flöha, Zschopau, and Wolkenstein, among other locations.
