A week of digging, planting and tending together: Around 20 volunteers are currently working with the Bergwaldprojekt e.V. in Saxon Switzerland. A total of 2,000 silver fir trees are to be planted by October 25, according to the Saxon Switzerland National Park and Forestry Administration. The small trees will be used for near-natural forest conversion in the Berggießhübel district.
In addition to planting activities, the program also includes biotope maintenance and the creation of a stream edge. The aim is to raise participants' awareness of the acute threats to the natural foundations of life and how to use resources with care.
"Working together, the participants not only learn about the enormous importance of forests for the climate and biodiversity, among other things, but also develop new relationships with nature," said Jonathan Schleißing, project manager from the Bergwaldprojekt association.
The project is carried out in cooperation with the Saxon Switzerland National Park and Forest Administration. The Bergwaldprojekt has been organizing volunteer assignments for 35 years. This year, the association is organizing 190 project weeks at around 100 different locations throughout Germany.
