Numerous planes took off late at Leipzig/Halle and Dresden airports on Wednesday until the afternoon. This can be seen from the departure times on the website of airport operator Mitteldeutsche Flughafen AG.
A total of 34 planes took off by 4 p.m., the majority of them later than planned. Leipzig/Halle Airport was particularly affected, with most departures taking off from there. Among the delayed connections were vacation flights to Antalya, Mallorca, Heraklion and Las Palmas.
A spokesperson for the airport operator explained on request that flight delays could have various causes - such as weather, airspace capacity, technology, delayed passengers or strikes. These are often so-called consequential delays caused by delays at other airports. The heavily congested European airspace could also play a role. However, there has been no noticeable increase in delays at Leipzig/Halle and Dresden airports since the start of the fall vacations, according to the spokesperson.
The two eastern German airports are currently also in the spotlight for another reason: at the end of September, Lufthansa announced that it would be cutting its ground staff at the two Saxon airports. Around 130 employees of the subsidiaries Airport Services Leipzig GmbH and Airport Services Dresden GmbH are affected. With the changeover to the winter flight schedule at the end of October, the tasks are to be taken over by subsidiaries of Mitteldeutsche Flughafen AG.
