Aronia berries originally come from North America. But they also thrive in Saxon soil.

The year 2025 proved to be a good year for bush berries. According to the State Statistical Office in Kamenz, the 35 farms specializing in this crop in the state were able to harvest a total of 767 tons of bush berries. In the previous year, only 193 were harvested due to the extreme late frosts. More than 80 percent of the cultivated area of almost 337 hectares is organic, it said.

Saxony is a land of aronia berries

The aronia berry is considered the most important shrub berry for cultivation in Saxony. According to the State Statistical Office, it is grown on a good 1,000 hectares across Germany. With an area of 149 hectares, Saxony is in third place behind Brandenburg and Bavaria. In Saxony, the aronia berry accounts for almost 45 percent of the shrub berries harvested. With a volume of 340 tons, the result of 2023 was almost reached again.

Other important types of bush berries are currants (116 hectares) and cultivated blueberries (27 hectares). The remaining types of fruit, including raspberries and gooseberries, accounted for an area of around 40 hectares, it said. Almost three quarters of Saxony's area under bush berries is located in the district of Meissen.
