Rail Day: Events Draw Rail Fans in Three Countries

Whether it’s a special guided tour of the Harz Narrow-Gauge Railway’s steam locomotive workshop or a visit to the Halle freight yard: From September 18 to 20, Germany will host the fifth annual “Railway Day.” There’s plenty to discover in Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt, and Thuringia. As can be seen on the event website, doors will be opened throughout the three states to experience “the fascinating diversity of railways in Germany.” 

In this region alone, 44 events will take place. For example, in Dresden, visitors can learn about the apprenticeship programs offered by the Dresden Public Transport Authority (DVB), tour the engine shed of the Thuringian Mountain Railway, or visit the historic Adorf im Vogtland railway depot. 

200,000 visitors last year

With more than ten events, Deutsche Bahn (DB) is also participating in the event in the region, according to a DB press release. Nationwide, there are a total of about 176 organizers, including companies, associations, and clubs. In Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt, and Thuringia, a total of 33 organizers are participating, according to the nonprofit advocacy group “Allianz pro Schiene,” which coordinates this event. 

“Rail Day” was launched in 2022 by the Federal Ministry of Digital and Transport and the rail industry, the website adds. It takes place annually in September as part of European Mobility Week. According to “Allianz pro Schiene,” in 2025 alone, approximately 200,000 people throughout Germany attended the various events.
