Two major energy transition projects for Chemnitz are receiving more than 30 million euros in EU funding. Specifically, these projects involve connecting the city to the future hydrogen network and constructing a solar power plant with battery storage. Economics Minister Dirk Panter (SPD) described these as two key projects for the future that are of great importance for the city as an industrial hub and for the entire region.
The first project involves connecting the city to the nationwide hydrogen network. According to reports, existing gas pipelines will be converted to hydrogen and new pipelines laid for this purpose. A total of 29.6 million euros will be invested in this effort. The entire project is scheduled for completion in 2029. Secondly, two large solar power plants and a battery storage facility will be built by 2028 at a cost of approximately 25 million euros. The storage facility, consisting of lithium-ion modules in 20 containers, is expected to have a capacity of 30 megawatt-hours.
