Saxony's exports fell slightly last year. The USA is a cause for concern, but remains the most important customer for products from the Free State.

Saxon foreign trade proved to be robust in 2025. This is how Minister of Economic Affairs Dirk Panter (SPD) put it at the presentation of the balance sheet in Dresden. At a total of 50.6 billion euros, exports had fallen by one percent compared to the previous year. The most important export market was the USA with 4.8 billion euros, ahead of China (4.5 billion euros) and the UK (4.2 billion euros). In relation to 2024, exports to the USA fell by six percent due to the US tariff policy.

Europe remains the most important sales market for goods from Saxony with a 63% share. Poland and the Czech Republic continue to be among Saxony's top 5 trading partners. Imports amounted to 39 billion euros, which corresponds to an increase of 12 percent.

Panter criticizes "tariffs as thumbscrews"

"With tariffs as thumbscrews and overcapacities in key sectors such as photovoltaics and electromobility, we are currently experiencing a fundamental transformation of the global rules of the game," Panter emphasized. A new nationalism and a supposed right of the strongest threatened the free markets. Saxony is networking with partners in the EU market, but also in Central Asia, India, Japan and Taiwan. This opens up new markets for Saxon companies and minimizes dependencies.

Personal trust as currency

According to Panter, it is all about building personal trust during business trips. "In a world of relationships, this is the only currency that protects against blackmail." We are living in times of uncertainty - in terms of foreign trade, but also in Saxony itself. "We are in an economic crisis situation." That is why we are in the process of changing things and questioning ourselves.

Economic Development Agency supports 18 new relocations and expansions

In the previous year, Wirtschaftsförderung Sachsen GmbH (WFS) supported 18 (2024: 19) new relocations and company expansions - in a persistently difficult environment, as WFS CEO Thomas Horn reported. This was backed by an investment volume of around 211 million euros. This enabled 868 jobs to be created or retained. The projects were spread across the whole of Saxony. The investors mainly come from Germany, the Netherlands, Finland, Switzerland, Japan, Taiwan and the USA.

"It is particularly pleasing that several companies have chosen Saxony as the headquarters for the launch of their European activities," said Horn. This shows what an important key position the Silicon Saxony region now has in global competition. New investments by companies already based in Saxony are also an important building block for the business location. They are too rarely in focus.

When it comes to future topics, Panter believes Saxony is well positioned as a business location. "With investments from ESMC, Infineon and Globalfoundries, the microelectronics region of Dresden stands for Europe's industrial future. 25 years of biotechnology offensive are also paying off." This sector is now a driving force for innovation, growth and employment in Saxony. Panter sees the defence industry as a promising area for the future: "The eastern German states have so far benefited little from the economic effects of defence investments - that must change."
