Two projects from Leipzig share the top prize at the Saxon State Prize for Architectural Culture. What particularly impressed the jury about the machine hall and the police guard post.

Two construction projects in Leipzig have been awarded the Saxon State Prize for Building Culture. From among 34 submissions, the jury selected a former machine hall in Leipzig-Connewitz that has been converted into studio and office space, and the police guard post at the U.S. Consulate General in downtown Leipzig as the winners. This marks the first time that two projects have received the award, each along with prize money of 17,500 euros, according to a statement from the State Ministry for Infrastructure and Regional Development in Dresden.

The jury praised the originality and consistency of both projects and sees them as examples of resource conservation, functionality, and design excellence, the announcement continued. “Reversible fixtures serving as independent thermal units” were installed in the machine hall in southern Leipzig. The police guard post, consisting of three prefabricated modules constructed of wood, demonstrates “the potential that lies even in small and highly regulated construction projects.”
