Starting in December 2026, there will be more space and comfort on the train between Dresden, Leipzig, and the Lusatia region: New double-decker trains and a bicycle car are expected to bring about improvements.

The new transportation contract for increased capacity and modern trains on the rail route between Dresden, Leipzig, and Lusatia has been signed. According to the agreement, the new “Oberelbe Electric Network” will be operated by DB Regio from December 2026 through December 2040.

The service is set to become more comfortable and reliable for passengers. On the particularly high-demand RE 50 line between Dresden and Leipzig, double-decker trains with more seats and a separate bicycle car will begin operating starting with the schedule change in December. Trains with greater capacity will also be introduced on the RE 15 line from Dresden to Hoyerswerda and the RE 18 line from Dresden to Cottbus.

In addition, service toward Elsterwerda-Biehla will be expanded. Here, the new S-Bahn S6 will replace the previous RB 31 with an hourly service departing from Dresden.
