Saxony's Best School Newspapers Honored with Awards

School newspapers have long been more than just reports on everyday school life. In Saxony, the best student editorial teams and young writers have now been honored.

From anorexia and transphobia to book reviews and interviews with the Thomaskantor: Over the past few months, Saxony’s students have explored a wide variety of topics in their newspapers and articles. According to the Saxon Ministry of Education and Cultural Affairs, the Free State’s best young journalists were honored last weekend with the Saxon Youth Journalism Award.

Best School Newspaper Comes from Frankenberg

A total of 32 prizes were awarded at the ceremony in Dresden, according to the Ministry of Education and Cultural Affairs. The newspaper “MLG-Thesen” from the Martin Luther Gymnasium in Frankenberg was named the best student newspaper in the high school and comprehensive school category. Second place went to the “Klinger-Express” from the Max-Klinger-Schule in Leipzig, and third place to “Linie 7” from the Gymnasium Dresden-Gorbitz.

Minister Praises Critical Questions and Creative Ideas

Minister of Culture Conrad Clemens praised the work of the young editorial teams. “Student newspapers promote real-world learning. They are more than just a project; they are democracy in action,” said the CDU politician. The students once again impressed the jury with “exciting stories, critical questions, and creative ideas.”

According to the organizers, a total of 143 student newspapers and individual articles were submitted. The topics ranged from film and book reviews to articles on anorexia, death, sexual violence, and transphobia.

The award has been presented for more than two decades

The Saxon Youth Journalism Award was presented for the 22nd time. The organizers are the Ministry of Culture and Youth Press Saxony. The winning student newspapers and articles were awarded prize money. In addition, the winners received trophies, books, and other prizes.
