A 53-year-old man fell onto the tracks on Wednesday evening and suffered life-threatening injuries after being struck by a commuter train. Police have now reported that he was likely under the influence of alcohol.

According to initial police investigations, the serious train accident at Dresden Central Station was caused by alcohol. On Wednesday evening, according to police, a 53-year-old man fell onto the tracks “without any outside influence” after losing his balance. At the last moment, he had tried to get to safety away from an approaching S-Bahn train and “press himself against the edge of the platform,” as the report further states.

However, the approaching train struck and pinned the man. Due to deep cuts on his upper arm and significant blood loss, the 53-year-old’s life was in danger, according to a spokesperson for the Federal Police Inspectorate. He was taken to a hospital.

The platform was reopened shortly after 8:00 p.m. The accident caused numerous complete and partial service disruptions in rail traffic.
