A truck driver who presumably fell asleep has caused an accident on the Autobahn 72 near Reichenbach in the Vogtland district, triggering a full closure that lasted for hours. According to the police, the driver was uninjured. According to initial findings, the 48-year-old was driving his articulated truck in the direction of Hof on Wednesday night when he presumably fell asleep at the wheel between the Zwickau-West and Reichenbach junctions. The truck left the road, broke through several sections of the crash barrier and only came to a halt just before a bridge. The road towards Hof had to be fully closed for several hours for the complex recovery of the vehicle. At around 9.15 a.m., the left-hand lane was initially reopened, and traffic was able to flow again without restrictions around an hour later. The driver was taken to hospital for examination as a precaution. The police estimate the damage to property at around 125,000 euros. Copyright 2026, dpa (www.dpa.de).
