Following the discovery of drone parts near the Bundeswehr air base in Wunstorf, the Federal Prosecutor’s Office is investigating a possible connection to the drone incident at Leipzig Airport. “If there could be a connection, we’ll look into it,” said a spokeswoman for the Karlsruhe-based agency. The NDR had previously reported on similarities in the design of the drone parts found near Wunstorf and those in the Leipzig case. One part is said to have been produced by a 3D printer and is therefore not commercially available. The spokeswoman for the Federal Public Prosecutor’s Office stated that she generally does not comment on reports. Investigators have been searching the hard-to-access terrain in the Hanover region since the beginning of the week. They believe the drone crashed there and broke into several pieces. According to the spokeswoman for the Federal Prosecutor’s Office, the State Criminal Police Office (LKA) in Lower Saxony is conducting a so-called threat response operation in connection with this matter; the Federal Prosecutor General is not investigating the Wunstorf case. In early August, a drone rigged with explosives was found at the Leipzig/Halle Airport next to Ukrainian cargo planes. The Federal Prosecutor General is investigating that case. The German government holds Russia responsible for the attempted attack. Moscow denies this. According to earlier statements by the LKA, the goal of the police operation in Lower Saxony is to find additional drone parts on the premises, as well as possible clues regarding the owner or drone pilot. The search is scheduled to continue on Friday. The Wunstorf Air Base is located east of the Steinhuder Meer area. It is an important Bundeswehr base where the German A400M fleet is stationed.
