The road safety of children must not be neglected, says Green politician Franziska Schubert. In the east of the Free State, a planned cycle path has been put on ice because there is no money.

For the time being, Saxony has no money for the planned cycle path from Neugersdorf to Seifhennersdorf in the east of the state. "The necessary construction funds of around 3.8 million euros have not yet been made available due to the tight budget situation of the Free State of Saxony. In this respect, a start of construction in the 2026 summer vacations is not foreseeable," said the Ministry of Infrastructure and Regional Development in its response to a minor question from Green Party parliamentary group leader Franziska Schubert.

"The cycle path would be an important step forward for the safety of schoolchildren in the region. The road safety of our children must not be compromised," emphasized the politician, who comes from the area. The building permit has been in place for more than two years and the project is ready for implementation.

Schubert: Bicycles are important for getting to school in rural areas

"I take a very critical view of such cutbacks. Safety on the way to school and environmentally friendly mobility are important," emphasized Schubert. Especially in rural areas, bicycles are used a lot to get around. For many children, it is relevant for their journey to school. "The children who use this section of road every day - and their parents - expect plans to be implemented as promised." This has something to do with reliability.
