The perpetrator responsible for the rampage in Leipzig had been undergoing inpatient treatment in a psychiatric facility just a few days earlier. As confirmed by the Ministry of Social Affairs in Dresden, the 33-year-old was in the clinic voluntarily at his own request.
According to a report in the "Leipziger Volkszeitung" newspaper, it is said to have been the specialist hospital for psychiatry and psychotherapy in Altscherbitz (district of North Saxony).
According to the ministry, the driver of the rampage, who lives in Leipzig, was released at the end of April. "During his stay in the clinic, there was no danger to himself or others. There were therefore no medical reasons to prevent the patient, who was in the clinic voluntarily, from leaving the clinic and thus to hold him against his will," it said.
The 33-year-old German had driven his vehicle several hundred meters through a busy shopping street in Leipzig city centre on Monday afternoon, killing two people and injuring numerous others.
