The number of forced evictions is falling, but thousands of people are still affected. The Left Party does not see a trend reversal - and is calling for decisive countermeasures.

The number of forced evictions in Saxony fell last year. According to a small inquiry by the left-wing parliamentary group in the Saxon state parliament, a total of 2,115 apartments were evicted in 2025. The previous year had seen a peak of 2,704 cases. This means that a total of 2,628 eviction orders were issued in 2025.

Housing policy spokesperson for the left-wing parliamentary group, Juliane Nagel, nevertheless warned against prematurely sounding the all-clear. "The decline is pleasing, but we cannot yet assume a trend reversal."

Rent debts as the main cause

She cited rent debts as the main reason for evictions. A rent arrears of just two months can lead to termination. "The people affected then become homeless, many end up on the street."

At the same time, Nagel referred to rising numbers of homeless people. As of January 31, 2025, 6,885 homeless people were registered in Saxony, compared to 4,535 the year before. "The number of unreported cases is likely to be much higher, as many of those affected are homeless undercover."

Call for a state strategy

The Left Party is calling for a state strategy against homelessness and more prevention, for example through stronger tenant protection, more social housing and better support for local authorities. "We call on the state government to take effective action against homelessness and forced evictions," it said.
