As the summer vacation begins, highways in Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt, and Thuringia could become congested. A significant increase in travel traffic is expected on Friday afternoon, according to the ADAC. According to the ADAC, the A4 and A9 in Saxony are likely to be major bottlenecks—the Hermsdorfer Kreuz interchange is particularly affected.
Delays may also occur at the Erfurter Kreuz interchange. On the A71 in southern Thuringia, maintenance work in the tunnels is hindering traffic flow.
According to the ADAC, there are currently around 1,000 construction sites on highways nationwide. These slow down vacationers during the holiday season just as much as the heavily trafficked highways heading north and south.
The ADAC recommends traveling between Monday and Wednesday. By then, the heaviest vacation traffic is usually already over. It is also advisable to avoid the midday heat and set out early in the morning or in the evening. You should always check the traffic situation before departure and have alternative routes ready.
