Local governments in Saxony took on more debt last year. A significant portion of that debt is attributable to the major cities.

The debt of Saxony’s municipalities and counties continued to rise last year. As of December 31, it stood at 3.815 billion euros, according to the State Statistical Office. That was 641 million euros more than in the previous year. According to the report, the per-capita debt of municipal budgets was 947.34 euros. The municipality of Dürrhennersdorf had the lowest debt per resident at 1.15 euros, while Gornau had the highest at 3,257.59 euros.

According to the State Statistical Office, 263 municipalities within the districts reduced their debt, while it increased in the other 152. Among the districts and independent cities, debt levels declined in Chemnitz and the Vogtland District, while they rose in the other districts as well as in Dresden and Leipzig. In 2025, nearly half (49.3 percent) of municipal debt was attributable to cities independent of a district; in the previous year, that share was 44.7 percent.
