Rain and the need to save: narrow-gauge railroads with fewer passengers

Fewer passengers, shortened timetables and rising costs are putting Saxony's traditional railroads under pressure.

Rainful vacations and reduced subsidies have resulted in a mixed year for the two narrow-gauge railroads in the Dresden region in 2025. However, Mirko Froß, Head of Railway Operations at Sächsische Dampfeisenbahngesellschaft (SDG), said that the company was satisfied with a decline of around nine percent to 275,000 passengers given the general conditions.

Around 157,000 people traveled on the Lößnitzgrundbahn between Radebeul-Ost and Radeburg, 13 percent fewer than in the previous year. According to Froß, the absence of the narrow-gauge railroad festival, which is only taking place this year, was also noticeable here. Germany's longest-serving narrow-gauge railroad through the Weißeritz Valley between Freital-Hainsberg and the spa town of Kipsdorf saw 118,000 passengers, eight percent fewer than in 2024.

Rain hits key excursion times

"We had a very rainy first part of the summer holidays and, even worse, very rainy October vacations," Froß explained. The Lößnitzgrundbahn and the Weißeritztalbahn are particularly popular excursion destinations for families at these times.

In addition, SDG was forced to cut the timetable due to a lack of funding from the Saxon budget. In 2025, 800,000 euros had to be saved, this year 900,000 euros. The five percent increase in fares since January is not enough to cope with this. "We will never be able to make up the deficit that we are missing," said Froß.

Maintenance cut back due to lack of funds

SDG has therefore also cut back on maintenance, meaning that fewer vehicles will be available in future, according to Froß. In order to maintain operations, SDG is dependent on sufficient funds in the upcoming budget for 2027 and 2028. "We hope that the narrow-gauge railroads will be considered as a cultural asset in the budget negotiations," said Froß.

Maintenance work will continue on both railroads until March 27. Operations will start on the last weekend in March - just in time for the vacations. More than 130 events and themed rides are planned on both lines for 2026. On April 6, for example, the "Easter Bunny Express" invites you to hunt for eggs. Other highlights include the narrow-gauge railroad festival on 19 and 20 September and the Christmas "Bimmelbahn Lichterglanz" on 28 and 29 November.
