The large-scale hydrogen project at the Bad Lauchstädt Energy Park has taken another important step forward. A central facility that processes the green hydrogen to be produced in the future for industrial use is now ready for phased operation following successful safety tests, according to a statement from the Energy Park.
Hydrogen is purified for industrial use
The gas purification plant, operated by the DBI – Freiberg Institute of Gas Technology, purifies the hydrogen generated from wind power before it is delivered to industrial facilities. This is because even the tiniest traces of moisture or other substances can disrupt industrial processes. In the future, the purified hydrogen will be transported via a pipeline approximately 25 kilometers long to the TotalEnergies refinery in Leuna.
The plant ensures that the hydrogen meets the quality standards required for industrial applications, said Hartmut Krause, spokesperson for the Bad Lauchstädt Energy Park. “With this milestone, industrial green hydrogen production—involving all process stages—is one step closer to becoming a reality.”
