According to Federal Minister of Transportation Steffen Bilger (CDU), despite all efforts, there is no absolute protection against drone attacks at German airports. Following a phone call with Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt (CSU), he described the situation on the news channel Welt TV as “alarming.”
“The people who want to disrupt air traffic with drones apparently know exactly what precautions can be taken at this point,” Bilger said. In the case of the drone incident at Leipzig/Halle Airport, the situation represented a “particular level of escalation” because explosives were also intended to be used there. “We can be glad that nothing more happened there in Leipzig.”
The federal government has not remained idle in the wake of the drone incidents of recent years. “But of course, one must always be aware that there is a residual risk, because airport grounds are very large and sprawling, and naturally, the technology used by those who want to disrupt air traffic—or who have even worse intentions—is also improving.”
