In Saxony, there are still fewer cars registered per capita than the national average. As of January 1, 2025, there were 542 cars per 1,000 inhabitants in the state, according to the State Statistical Office in Kamenz. This was around eight percent fewer than the national average (590). Compared to the previous year, the car density rose slightly by 0.6 percent (2024: 539).
In a state comparison, Saarland had the most cars per capita (646 per 1,000 inhabitants) and Berlin the fewest (334). Within Saxony, the Erzgebirgskreis district led the way with 638 cars per 1,000 inhabitants, followed by the Vogtlandkreis district and the Bautzen district. The independent cities of Chemnitz and Dresden were significantly lower. The lowest car density was in Leipzig with 384 - which was also the second lowest figure in Germany.
Compared to 2024, the density increased above all in the Erzgebirgskreis and the district of Nordsachsen (both up 1.3 percent). In Dresden (minus 0.5 percent) and Leipzig (minus 0.2 percent), on the other hand, there was a slight decline.
