Following the discovery of an explosive-laden drone at Leipzig/Halle Airport, the police are stepping up their efforts: A new radar system is designed to detect drones from a greater distance.

Following the incident involving an explosive-laden drone at Leipzig/Halle Airport, police have set up a post equipped with special radar. The equipment was installed on the visitor platform of the old control tower, as observed by a dpa photographer. The Federal Police could not be reached for details on Saturday. According to the news portal “Tag24,” the system is an EchoShield radar system capable of detecting approaching drones from long distances and tracking their flight paths.

A few days ago at the airport, a drone equipped with explosives and a detonator was discovered near Ukrainian transport aircraft and brought down by an employee. In addition, an aircraft collided with an unknown small flying object—possibly a second drone. The Federal Prosecutor’s Office is investigating on suspicion of attempted detonation of explosives and endangering air traffic.
