Leipzig's municipal housing association continues to focus on new construction. Why serial construction should also play a major role.

The municipal Leipziger Wohnungs- und Baugesellschaft (LWB) plans to build around 800 new apartments in the coming year. Some of these are to be built in serial construction - similar to the prefabricated prefabricated buildings from the GDR era, according to the company.

Earthworks for the first LWB project using serial construction began this week. "Serial construction is intended to make new construction more efficient, faster and more cost-effective," explained Doreen Bockwitz, Managing Director of Housing and Construction at the LWB.

The first project is intended to create 121 subsidized apartments for senior citizens. Construction of three further serial housing projects in the Grünau district is scheduled to begin in 2026. The municipal company also plans to lay the foundation stone for three conventional new-build projects next year. In total, more than 800 apartments should therefore be under construction by 2026.

The LWB currently has almost 37,000 apartments in its portfolio. This means that a good ten percent of all apartments in Messestadt are owned by the municipal company.
