The railroad is repairing defects on the Elbe bridge in Riesa and keeping it stable. Although one track remains largely free, trains between Saxony's largest cities are not running as usual.

For maintenance work on the railroad bridge over the Elbe in Riesa, passengers will have to be prepared for months of cancelled stops and timetable changes on the line between Leipzig and Dresden from mid-May. At the start and end of construction on May 18 and 19 and on July 24 and 25, the bridge will be closed overnight from 9 p.m. to 9 a.m., as announced by Deutsche Bahn. Long-distance trains will be widely diverted during this time. The RE 50 between Leipzig and Dresden will be replaced by buses between Oschatz and Priestewitz.

Effects on long-distance and local services

During the rest of the construction period, traffic will only be able to cross the Elbe on one track. From May 19 to 24, ICE trains on the Wiesbaden-Dresden route and EC trains on the Leipzig-Krakow/Przemysl route will therefore not stop in Riesa. The IC connection Stuttgart-Dresden will stop as usual.

The timetable for the RE 50 between Leipzig and Dresden will also change from 19 May to 24 July. Arrivals from Riesa will be delayed on every second journey to Dresden and the stop in Radebeul Ost will be canceled. The RB 45 will be replaced by buses between Riesa and Zeithain from 19 to 24 May, while trains will run as scheduled on the Riesa-Chemnitz section.

Extensive work on the bridge

The extensive maintenance work is intended to ensure the long-term stability of the bridge. The work focuses on replacing the bridge sleepers on the two southern tracks due to their age. In addition, the railroad is eliminating defects in the steel structure and renewing the corrosion protection. The superstructure in the bridge area is also being modernized. To the east of the Elbe near Röderau, a construction site access road is currently being set up on the B169 in the direction of Riesa, where a speed limit of 50 kilometers per hour will apply.
