Following the drone incidents at Leipzig/Halle Airport, a hundred-strong police unit is searching the perimeter fence along the northern runway. The officers are moving on foot in a line, as observed by a reporter from the German Press Agency. What exactly they are looking for has not yet been officially disclosed.
Due to the search operations, the north runway has been closed since 10:00 a.m., according to an airport spokesperson. Passenger air traffic is not affected.
The area had already been searched on Thursday. Previously, the Saxony State Criminal Police Office (LKA) had announced that the search for the second—still unidentified—flying object involved in the incident would continue.
The investigation was triggered by the discovery of a drone equipped with an explosive device on the southern runway early Wednesday morning. Shortly thereafter, a second flying object collided with a cargo plane that was unable to land due to the closure of the north runway and had to abort its landing. After being diverted to Hanover, minor damage was discovered on the aircraft.
