Marco Rose says the last few months at RB Leipzig have robbed him of his lightheartedness. What he missed back then—and why he’s now advocating for his successor.

Marco Rose lamented the lack of support toward the end of his tenure with Bundesliga club RB Leipzig and called for more patience with head coach Martin Demichelis. “The last few months in Leipzig have really taken a toll on me,” Rose said on RTL/Sky Sport. He added that he had lost some of his lightheartedness. “And of course, you need the club’s full backing and support in your role. These days, things are called into question far too early, even though you’re often in the middle of a process, even though you have injured players here and there, and maybe that little extra something is missing now and then.”

Rose coached the largest soccer club in his hometown from September 2022 to March 2025. Toward the end of his tenure, his relationship with supervisory board chairman Oliver Mintzlaff was considered strained; Mintzlaff had criticized Leipzig in an interview for failing to capitalize on the weaknesses of record champion Bayern Munich in the past.

Demichelis has already given him the thumbs-down

Since July, Rose has been the coach of English Premier League club AFC Bournemouth. “The year off did me good—it gave me a chance to reflect on a few things,” said the 50-year-old. He said he had been “relatively tired in the evenings” during his first few days there, as he had been overwhelmed by the volume of work. Just last Sunday, he celebrated his second Premier League victory with his new team, a 3-0 win at Manchester United.

Speaking about his former club, Leipzig, he also lamented the treatment of coach Demichelis, who has been in office only since the summer. He said he felt “that the verdict is negative. And that’s obviously not a pleasant feeling, and if that’s then confirmed, it’s not nice for the people involved.” Rose would like to see more of a sense of responsibility there. But he also knows that as a coach, you have a privileged job and have to withstand pressure.

In Leipzig, the popular and successful coach Ole Werner was unexpectedly let go this summer. As a result, Demichelis didn’t have the benefit of the doubt among many fans that a new coach normally enjoys. Added to this are weak performances and results, especially on the road. In the Bundesliga and the Champions League, RB has yet to earn a single point on the road; their only away wins have come in the Cup against fourth-division side Trier and third-division side Essen.
