Talented midfielder Leon Mergner has signed a professional contract with second-division club 1. FC Magdeburg. The young prospect made his professional debut against Eintracht Braunschweig, and against Osnabrück, he was in the starting lineup for the team’s first league win and received special praise from coach Petrik Sander. Now the club is rewarding him for his performances with a long-term contract. “Signing my first professional contract is a huge dream come true for me. Being able to take this step with FCM means the world to me,” Mergner explained on the club’s website. The now 20-year-old has been in Magdeburg since 2022, progressing through the A and B youth teams and earning promotion to the fourth-tier Regionalliga with the U23s in 2025. During summer training, Mergner trained with the pros and seized his opportunity right away. “Leon already made an impression on the coaches during preseason with his high-intensity, active playing style. Now the goal is to intensify his development and not let up,” said Magdeburg’s sporting director, Peer Jaekel. The club did not disclose the exact length of the contract.
