To kick off the new second-division season, 1. FC Magdeburg suffered a crushing defeat against Braunschweig. Almost nothing went right for the team from Magdeburg, and to make matters worse, Herbert Bockhorn was shown a red card.

1. FC Magdeburg suffered the worst home loss in the club’s history in the second division to start the season. In front of 28,508 spectators, the team from Magdeburg, playing a man down, lost to Eintracht Braunschweig 1–6 (0–4).

Aaron Opoku (16th minute), Jan Urbich (21st, 26th), Mehmet Aydin (43rd minute, penalty kick), Samuele Di Benedetto (51st minute), and Florian Flick (61st minute) scored for Eintracht. Braunschweig dominated the action

FCM coach Petrik Sander fielded four new signings in his starting lineup—including the center-back duo of Anselmo García Mac Nulty and Paul Jaeckel. The coaching staff hadn’t altered the core of Magdeburg’s playing style during preseason, but they did want to bring more consistency and toughness to the defense.

The game continued to go against FCM. Bockhorn’s red card was a harsh decision. But that wasn’t all: After a VAR review, Braunschweig was awarded a penalty kick, which Aydin converted without mercy.

After the break, Magdeburg brought on Piere Nadjombe for the lackluster Moritz-Broni Kwarteng. The newcomer immediately initiated a counterattack, which Zukowski finished to make it 1–4. But the score didn’t last long, as Braunschweig scored again on the counter. Magdeburg tried to salvage some pride, but had to fend off almost constant pressure from Braunschweig—and ended up conceding a sixth goal.
