SC Magdeburg remains on course for the championship in the German Handball League. In front of 6,600 spectators, the team from the city on the Elbe achieved a clear 41:28 (21:12) victory against HSV Hamburg. Omar Ingi Magnusson was Magdeburg's best scorer with eleven goals. After the international break, Magdeburg now face their closest rivals Flensburg-Handewitt, where they can clinch the title with a draw.
Magdeburg got off to a better start, began with two goalkeeper saves and quickly took a two-goal lead. The home side was also on top in offense and gradually extended its lead - forcing Hamburg's Head Coach Torsten Jansen to call an early timeout (8:3/12th minute). The visitors tried a seventh outfield player, but SCM pulled nine goals ahead by the break - including two goals from goalkeeper Sergey Hernandez into an empty net.
The SCM also tried to keep up the pace after the break and extended its lead to ten goals. Hamburg switched to more offensive cover, but Magdeburg continued to find solutions. Only rarely did the home side's actions lack the final consistency, meaning the victory was clear in the end.
