Pupils in Saxony will soon be able to learn with AI - and teachers will receive digital support. What is behind the "Telli" chatbot?

Artificial intelligence (AI) in the classroom: new AI software is to be made available at schools in Saxony in future. The plan is to introduce the chatbot interface called "Telli" in 2026, the Ministry of Education announced on request. However, individual educational and legal issues regarding age-appropriate use still need to be clarified before it can be used in practice, it said.

The AI chatbot - a joint project between the federal states - is intended to support teachers in lesson planning and can also be used by pupils for learning. Bremen, Brandenburg and Saxony-Anhalt also rely on the AI chatbot.

According to the ministry, the state's own AI assistant "KAI" has been available to teachers in Saxony since June 2024. This draws on AI resources that "Telli" also uses. Since this school year, pupils in grades 5 to 12 have also had access to an AI-supported online math learning system. The findings and results of the state project will be incorporated into the further development of the new AI chatbot.
