Because the nearest school in Thuringia is too far away, eight children will attend an elementary school in Saxony in future.

In the coming school year, children from border towns in Thuringia will once again start school in Saxony. This will continue a long-standing cooperation between the two states, as announced by the education ministries in Dresden and Erfurt. Eight first-graders from the Vogtland Oberland will therefore be attending the elementary school in Elsterberg from August.

Additional class with pupils from Thuringia

A total of 33 children will be learning in Year 1 there. Due to the additional pupils from Thuringia, a second enrolment class will be opened. "The continuation of this proven cooperation shows how pragmatic solutions can succeed in the interests of parents and children across state borders," said Thuringian Education Minister Christian Tischner (CDU) according to the press release. The schooling in Elsterberg is a real relief for families from the Oberland region.

Next school in Thuringia more difficult to reach

The arrangement takes into account the special geographical conditions and the traditional school travel situation in the Thuringian Oberland region. From the villages of Cossengrün, Eubenberg, Hohndorf, Schönbach Pansdorf and Tremnitz, which lie on the meandering border between Thuringia and Saxony, the nearest Thuringian elementary school in Greiz is much more difficult to reach than Elsterberg.

"We are making this decision in the interests of the children - short distances for short legs," said Saxony's Minister of Education Conrad Clemens (CDU). There should also be a reliable, contractual agreement between Thuringia and Saxony for the next school year.
