The number of children and young people taken into care in Saxony has risen. 16 to 18-year-olds are particularly affected. What is behind the measures.

In Saxony, the number of children taken into care by the authorities has risen slightly. According to the State Statistical Office, provisional protective measures were taken for 3,281 children and young people in 2024. There were 250 fewer in the previous year. In addition, 458 foreign children and young people were taken into care following unaccompanied entry (previous year: 2,008).

At 34 percent of all measures, the age group of 16 to 18-year-olds was the most affected. In more than half of the cases, youth welfare offices, police and public order authorities had arranged for the child to be taken into care due to urgent danger. The most common reason was that the parents were overwhelmed.
