The German premiere of “Sammy and Frida: Chaos with a Scythe” kicks off the 31st International Children’s Film Festival “Schlingel” in Chemnitz this Friday. According to the description, the film—for children ages eight and up—tells the story of an 11-year-old boy who suffers from an immune disorder and therefore rarely leaves his room. Until one day, the lively Frida shows up. Numerous guests from the worlds of politics, culture, and the film industry are expected to attend the festival’s opening at the Opera House (4:15 p.m.). The film festival for children and young audiences is entering its 31st edition. It will feature 194 films from 60 countries—including several productions that will be shown publicly on the big screen for the very first time. These include “Das NEINhorn – Der Film,” based on the children’s book of the same name by Marc-Uwe Kling, as well as the third installment of the “Häschenschule” series, “Geheimnis um das Goldene Ei.” This year, there is a special focus on filmmaking in Poland. In the festival’s competition, 58 feature-length and 81 short films are vying for various awards. The winners will be selected by several juries consisting of children, young people, and industry experts. Copyright 2026, dpa (www.dpa.de). All rights reserved
