The foundation stone is being laid today for the renovation of the Stadthalle, which has been closed since 2004. The Art Nouveau building is to be used as a multifunctional event venue in the future, the city of Görlitz announced in its latest official gazette. The listed concert hall will also have a modern extension.
According to the information, more than 50 million euros will be invested in the major project. The federal government and the Free State of Saxony are funding the project in equal parts with a total of around 44 million euros. Construction work began this spring and is due to be completed in 2029. The modernized building will be available for congresses, conferences, concerts and other cultural events. There will be around 1,400 seats in the large hall, it said.
The foundation stone is being laid exactly 115 years to the day after the concert hall opened. It was built for the Silesian Music Festival and inaugurated on October 27, 1910. Due to "economic and structural imponderables", the building was closed in 2004. Between 2015 and 2019, the monument was structurally secured in three construction phases. The small hall could then be used for events again to a limited extent. In future, it should be able to accommodate around 250 guests.
