RB Leipzig are gaining momentum under new coach Ole Werner. In the fast-paced 6:0 (4:0) goalfest against FC Augsburg, the Saxons, featuring a number of new turbo players and led by the brilliant teenagers Yan Diomande (18) and Assan Ouédraogo (19), played with gusto and ice-cold.
With their pace and technique, the attacking line in particular, featuring goalscorers Diomande (10th minute), Rômulo (18th) and Antonio Nusa (22nd), exposed coach Sandro Wagner's home side as naive and out of their depth early on.
Midway through the first half, the game was decided. Almost every Leipzig shot was a goal against a defenceless Augsburg defence full of holes, which allowed itself to be caught out and taken by surprise. Christoph Baumgartner (38') increased the score to 0:4 before the break.
Augsburg's heaviest home defeat
The strong Ouédraogo crowned his performance after the break (56'). Defender Castello Lukeba (65) added another after a goalkeeping error. 0:6 - until Saturday, Augsburg had never lost so heavily in their own stadium in 15 years in the Bundesliga. The highest FCA defeat ever in the German elite league was an 8-1 defeat at VfL Wolfsburg in May 2019.
After 19 points from their last seven unbeaten games, Leipzig have established themselves in second place in the table for the first time. And the team, which has been realigned following prominent departures, is showing an astonishing development under Werner. The results are right, the soccer is developing.
In the duel between the two 37-year-old head coaches, it wasn't just Werner's team that seemed more mature. Bundesliga novice Wagner and his Augsburg side were unable to find a concept against the quick-acting Leipzig side, who exploited the huge spaces with direct play and double passes on the counterattack.
Even without the talented attacking player Mert Kömür, who was absent through illness, the hosts had some promising moves going forward, but were nowhere near the finishing power of Leipzig. However, a deflected cross from full-back Dimitrios Giannoulis almost made it 1:1 (16'). But luckily for RB goalkeeper Peter Gulacsi, the ball danced onto the crossbar.
Next goal for Wagner
After four points from the previous two games, Leipzig's thrashing was another heavy blow for Augsburg and their coach. Wagner found no means of limiting the damage. At 0:6, goalkeeper Finn Dahmen also made a mistake when he tried to fend off a cross in the penalty area. He failed - and Lukeba was able to slide the ball into the goal.
