1. FC Magdeburg celebrated an important victory in the 2nd Bundesliga. The team from the Elbe city won 5:4 (5:3) at SpVgg Greuther Fürth in a spectacular match in front of 11,061 spectators. Despite taking a 5:1 lead, they had to tremble until the end.
Reno Münz (13th/own goal), Mateusz Zukowski (15th, 29th, 32nd) and Rayan Ghrieb (23rd) scored for FCM, Brynjar Ingi Bjarnason (8th), Doni Arifi (43rd), Jan Elvedi (45th +5th) and Sayfallah Ltaief (47th) for the hosts. With 23 points, FCM climbed to 13th place for the time being.
"I'm glad that the team performed like that in the end and stood up for the players who were supposedly at fault for the goals conceded," said coach Petrik Sander. "You concede the same goal three times. And then it becomes difficult after 5:1. We then put it behind us after 5:4," explained winger Alexander Nollenberger.
FCM turn up the heat after falling behind
FCM's Jean Hugonet returned to the starting eleven for the first time after his injury lay-off, while Sander also deployed Ghrieb at right-back. The hosts started the game better and took the lead through Bjarnason after a corner, as FCM goalkeeper Dominik Reimann fumbled the ball. FCM struggled to get into the game and were initially lucky that an attempt from Ghrieb was deflected into the Fürth box by Reno Münz.
After that, however, Magdeburg turned up the heat and scored four more goals within twenty minutes. Mateusz Zukowski scored three times as the Elbe club repeatedly switched gears quickly after winning the ball. The hosts were not completely knocked out, however, because FCM still had no access to corners: First Arifi headed in, then Elvedi scored from a scramble.
Magdeburg's standard weaknesses bring Fürth back
Magdeburg's uncertainty continued after the break - after Atik lost the ball, Ltaief Reimann lobbed over to score the early equalizer. The visitors had finally brought Fürth back into the game. After that, the game became increasingly flat, with only the question of whether one team would manage to score. Magdeburg saved the victory in the end - Reimann intercepted a corner kick just before the line. Curious: The away team had already won the first leg 5:4.
