Second-division soccer club Dynamo Dresden will have to play the DFB Cup match against Bundesliga side FSV Mainz 05 on Monday (18:00/Sky) without goalscorer Christoph Daferner. Detailed examinations at the hospital revealed that the striker suffered a more serious injury to his right hand in training, which requires an immediate break. Dynamo did not say how long the 27-year-old would be out for.
"The loss of Daffi, so close to the cup match, definitely affects us. He's already shown how important he is for our game in the first two games. We hope that we can keep the downtime as short as possible so that we can get him back on the pitch quickly. But we have enough quality in the squad and are now doing everything we can to make up for this together," said Dynamo's sporting director Thomas Brendel.
Daferner had scored for the newly promoted side in each of their first two games of the season against Fürth (2:3) and Magdeburg (1:2). He has played a total of 117 times for the Saxons so far. It remains to be seen whether Vincent Vermeij, who signed from Fortuna Düsseldorf last week, will replace him in the starting eleven. "Vince has done a reasonable preparation, as far as I know he has done everything," said coach Thomas Stamm about the 1.96-metre Dutchman.
