SC Magdeburg has a clear start-to-finish win against HSG Wetzlar and is once again top of the table in the German Handball League. Gisli Kristjansson extends his contract until 2030.

SC Magdeburg has regained the lead in the German Handball League and, on top of that, extended the contract with key player Gisli Kristjansson until 2030. The team from the city on the Elbe won 33:20 (22:10) against HSG Wetzlar in front of 6,600 spectators. Magdeburg's top scorer was Omar Ingi Magnusson with nine goals.

Lukas Mertens returned to the team after his break in Zagreb; apart from Manuel Zehnder, Head Coach Bennet Wiegert was able to make full use of his squad. Magdeburg initially shone defensively in the game and built a four-goal lead (5:1/8th minute), but still missed chances. Wetzlar called a timeout, but there was hardly any improvement: Magdeburg increased its lead, led by seven goals (11:4/16th minute) and increased it to twelve shortly before the break (20:8/27th minute).

Felix Claar also made his first appearance after the break - Magdeburg intercepted the visitors' first attacks and increased the difference to 16 goals (27:11/35th minute). Wetzlar then called its final timeout of the game, but it was only when the SCM's concentration waned that the scoring slowed down. That did nothing to change SCM's completely unchallenged victory.

Kristjansson: "The best club in the world"

After the final whistle, Magdeburg announced the extension of Gisli Kristjansson's contract until 2030 to great jubilation. "I love it here, for me this is the best club in the world," said the 26-year-old Icelander, explaining his contract extension over the microphone.

Kristjansson has been in Magdeburg since 2020 and is one of the reasons for SCM's rise to become a top European club. The Iceland international has won the German championship twice and two Champions League titles with the club from the Elbe. "Gisli is a player who, with his commitment and passion, stands for everything that SC Magdeburg embodies," said Wiegert.
