Bundesliga handball club SC Magdeburg has also won its second game at the Club World Championship in Egypt and qualified for the semi-finals as expected. SCM won 36:26 (16:13) against Asian champions Sharjah SC from the United Arab Emirates, but struggled at times. Daniel Pettersson was Magdeburg's top scorer with seven goals.
The Champions League winners wanted to secure their place in the semi-finals against the best group runners-up with a clear victory, but struggled. The SCM lacked access and fell behind (4:7/11th). Coach Bennet Wiegert called a timeout and complained about his team's attacks: "We're not causing them problems, we're causing ourselves problems." The SCM only took the lead for the first time after 22 minutes and was able to pull away somewhat in the final minutes.
Lack of concentration prevents clearer success
Magdeburg continued to have a few problems in attack after the break, but now got its defense better and extended its lead (18:13/36). The visitors led by eight goals at one stage, but the Emiratis fought their way back (26:22/49) as the SCM lacked concentration up front. The semi-finals will take place on Tuesday and SCM's opponent has not yet been determined.
