SC Magdeburg remain in the race to defend their title in the German Handball League. The SCM won 37:28 (18:14) against HSV Hamburg. Magdeburg's top scorer in front of 6,600 spectators was Omar Ingi Magnusson with eleven goals. The club from the Elbe city remains first in the table, one point ahead of the leading duo Berlin and Melsungen.
Both teams got off to a faulty start to the game, but SCM quickly managed to stem the losses of possession and carve out a lead (6:2/9). Even when Magdeburg slipped up in attack, Hamburg was rarely able to capitalize on that and so the gap was maintained. The game settled down somewhat after a quarter of an hour, but Magdeburg did not allow the visitors to close the gap (16:12/26).
The SCM was also the more focused team after the break and stretched its lead to six goals (23:17/38). Magdeburg repeatedly found solutions in its positional attack and also repeatedly played at pace. HSV, who had only 14 out of a possible 16 players, had nothing more to add early on (27:19/42). As a result, Pablo Lange, a substitute for Musche from the third-division reserves, got a few minutes on the left wing.
