Bundesliga handball club SC Magdeburg remain hot on the heels of league leaders Flensburg. The Magdeburg team won 28:24 (11:14) against the Rhein-Neckar Löwen after a hard-fought game in the Getec Arena, which was sold out with 6,600 spectators. Magdeburg's best scorer was Felix Claar with six goals. "The Lions are a very good team and a very difficult game, we didn't convert many chances. Things went better in the second half," said SCM player Elvar Örn Jonsson.
Magdeburg gained a slight advantage in the opening spell, was particularly alert in defense and opened up a small lead (5:2/9th minute). When Magdeburg missed a number of attacks, the Lions turned the game around (7:8/16th) - among other things, SCM missed three seven-meter penalties in a row and was at an overall disadvantage in the goalkeeper duel. The visitors also led at the break because Magdeburg did not score for almost eight minutes. "We played at eye level with the Champions League winners. The 6:0 run against us was bitter and really hurts," said former SCM player and Lions coach Maik Machulla.
Magdeburg's 6:0 run to turn the game around
Magdeburg also struggled in attack after the break, was repeatedly forced to go to the seven-meter spot - and continued to miss too often from there. The home side at least managed to close the gap when it was outnumbered (16:17/38), but the Lions stretched the gap to three goals again when they were short-handed. The visitors were not able to pull away any further, but the SCM turned the game around with a 6:0 run (24:20/49). Although the Lions reduced the deficit again, they were not able to turn the game around. Steven Jacobsen was shown red shortly before the end after his third time penalty.
