SC Magdeburg looked like a sure winner against the Rhein-Neckar Löwen with twenty minutes to go, but then had to fight for victory right to the end.

SC Magdeburg celebrated a 30:27 (13:11) home win against Rhein-Neckar Löwen in the German Handball League. Magdeburg's best scorer in front of 6,600 spectators was Magnus Saugstrup with seven goals. Magdeburg remains just one point behind the top duo of Füchse Berlin and MT Melsungen with eleven minus points.

Captain Christian O'Sullivan was back in the Magdeburg line-up for the first time after his knee operation, although the club started the game with three missed shots. SCM worked its way into the game thanks to goalkeeper Sergey Hernandez's saves and took the lead for the first time after nine minutes (4:3). The teams then played at a comparable level and so the gap remained small. The Red & Greens failed to open up a three-goal gap and then had to concede the equalizer (10:10/24). Both teams repeatedly lapsed in concentration, but Magdeburg took a lead into the break.

Mistakes remained an integral part of the game in the second half, but neither team was able to take a decisive advantage. Magdeburg then produced a 4:0 run (22:16/43) to put the visitors, who had only 14 players on court, under even more pressure. The Lions switched to 7-on-6 and reduced the deficit (26:24/51). Magdeburg caught itself in time, however, and so claimed a deserved victory.
